NovaEel’s technology is centred on EstrAqua®, a proprietary approach developed to address one of the fundamental challenges in commercial American eel aquaculture: producing a predictable population suited to efficient grow-out.

Developed through more than a decade of research, testing and regulatory work, EstrAqua® is quickly being advanced toward approval for use in commercial aquaculture. NovaEel’s objective is to provide North American producers with a practical pathway to growing locally harvested glass eels to market size.

Our Technology

EstrAqua® is a medicated feed developed for use in commercial eel aquaculture. Its active pharmaceutical ingredient is 17β-estradiol, a naturally occurring hormone found in vertebrates. The treatment is designed to support the production of predominantly female eels, which reach substantially larger market size than males and are therefore better suited to efficient commercial grow-out.

How EstrAqua® Works

Chemical structure of 17β-Estradiol with its name displayed below.

EstrAqua® may also have applications in aquatic invasive-species management. NovaEel is collaborating with the Western Association of Wildlife Agencies on the use of estradiol-based feed technology in programs designed to create sex-reversed broodstock for non-toxic population control of invasive fish. This work is being advanced in cooperation with the U.S. fish and wildlife agencies and through the federal regulatory process.
